In 1978 I taught my first postgraduate continuing engineering course at The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science. Designated course 547, it was the first credit course on digital printing. Click here to see the course outline. Over the four years that I taught the course, it was attended by more than 900 students worldwide. It would be decades before another college accredited course addressed the subject.

In 1981, the University teamed me with Asher Ende to jointly teach a course on the technological and legal impacts of telecommunications as applied to print. Click here to see the course outline. Covering topics the legal aspects of the electronic transmission and printing of mail and other topics, course 689 was very successful, attracting an international audience of students from both government and industry.

Leading visionaries in printing and publishing gathered in Washington, D.C. for the World Conference on Electronic Printing and Publishing. Attendance was so large that the conference venue had to be moved to the Lisner Auditorium of The George Washington University. The participants, working in research, private industry, and government, shared a common interest in the future of electronic printing and publishing.

The best and brightest print technology scientists spoke on developments in electronic imaging and printing. Representatives of government agencies explored the potential benefits of the new and forthcoming technologies. Presenters gave dramatic on-stage demonstrations of new technologies and invited audience members to try out the equipment for themselves during breaks, an invitation many accepted.

Coinciding with the conference was The Second International Electronic Printing Art Exhibition, at which state-of-the-art imaging was pushed to creative limits. Transcripts are available of conference presentations.

I curated the Printing Impact on Man exhibit, a survey of the development and societal impacts of printing technology. A unique collection of artifacts, printed specimens, and printing machine, the exhibit was first displayed from January through February 1978, in Washington, D.C. Its galleries occupied four floors of the George Washington University Gelman Library, two blocks from the White House.

First Lady Betty Ford toured the exhibit, and was so impressed that she arranged for it to travel to the Public Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the following year. The Grand Rapids community embraced it.

There was significant television and radio coverage, and praise by the city newspaper. School buses lined up to drop off students at the museum to learn printing. Local printing and paper companies produced an exhibit book and history of their companies.

Over 10,000 people toured both Printing Impact on Man Exhibitions to learn not only how printing technology works, but what its societal impacts are today and into the future.
